What Is the Google Map Pack and Why Does It Matter for Winnipeg Service Businesses?

Published May 13, 2026

If you have ever searched for a plumber, electrician, or HVAC company in Winnipeg, you have seen the Map Pack. It is the block of three business listings that appears at the top of Google search results, above the regular website links, with a map on the right side.

Those three spots get the overwhelming majority of clicks. If your business is not in them, most people searching for your services will never find you.

Here is everything you need to know about the Map Pack and how to get your Winnipeg trades business into it.

What Exactly Is the Map Pack?

The Map Pack, also called the Local 3-Pack, is Google's way of showing the most relevant local businesses for a search query. When someone in Winnipeg types "electrician near me" or "HVAC company Winnipeg," Google shows three businesses it considers the best match based on relevance, proximity, and prominence.

Each listing in the Map Pack shows the business name, star rating, review count, address, hours, and a link to call or get directions. Searchers can book or call directly from the Map Pack without ever visiting a website.

That is why it matters so much. The Map Pack is where buying decisions happen.

Why Only Three Spots?

Google limits the Map Pack to three results because it is designed for mobile users making quick decisions. Three results fit cleanly on a phone screen. Searchers pick one and move on.

There is a "View all" link below the three results that expands to a full Google Maps list, but the reality is that most people never click it. If you are not in the top three, you are largely invisible.

How Does Google Decide Who Gets In?

Google uses three main factors to rank local businesses in the Map Pack:

Relevance

How well does your Google Business Profile match what the person searched for? This comes down to your categories, business description, services listed, and the keywords in your profile content.

Distance

How close is your business to the person searching? For service area businesses like most trades companies, this is based on your listed service area and the location Google associates with your profile.

Prominence

How well known and trusted is your business? This is driven by your review count, review recency, your overall star rating, how often people interact with your profile, and how active your profile is.

The good news is that all three of these factors are directly improvable. None of them require paying for ads.

How to Get Your Winnipeg Trades Business Into the Map Pack

Optimize your categories

Your primary category should be as specific as possible. If you are an electrician, select "Electrician" not just "Contractor." Add every relevant secondary category that applies to your services.

Complete every field in your profile

Business description, services, hours, attributes, photos — every empty field is a signal to Google that your profile is incomplete. Complete profiles consistently outrank incomplete ones.

Build review velocity

Getting a steady stream of recent reviews is one of the fastest ways to improve your Map Pack ranking. You do not need hundreds of reviews. You need consistent, recent ones. A business with 20 reviews received over the last 60 days will often outrank a business with 80 reviews where the last one was 8 months ago.

Post regularly

Google Business Profile posts tell Google your business is active. One post per week is enough to maintain a strong activity signal.

Make sure your service area is correct

If your service area is set too broadly or includes areas you do not actually serve, Google may not rank you strongly for any of them. Keep your service area focused on where you actually want to get calls.

The Bottom Line

The Map Pack is the most valuable piece of digital real estate a local trades business can occupy. It is free, it drives real calls, and it compounds over time as your profile builds authority.

Getting in is not about luck or budget. It is about having a profile that Google trusts more than your competitors.
